Sometime in the early 2000s, Square Enix and Disney felt it right to combine their properties into a brand-new adventure full of action, darkness, and heart. Literally, like there are hearts that live within hearts, and there’s a door full of hearts, and enemies withOUT hearts called the heartLESS. The list goes on. While the idea seems ridiculous even by today’s standards, it was a brilliant one. Kingdom Hearts is now a popular franchise with games across all consoles. The most recent one, Kingdom Hearts III, is a title we’ve been waiting over a decade for. It’s now here and it is the first in the near 13 game series to top the charts in the UK, according to United Kingdom Interactive Entertainment (UKIE.) What a journey it has been.
Kingdom Hearts III beat out former chart-topper, Resident Evil 2, which released on January 25th. The remake of this classic PlayStation title is now second in the charts. Red Dead Redemption 2 is now in third. The top ten games are as follows:
- Kingdom Hearts III
- Resident Evil 2
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- FIFA 19
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Spyro Reignited Trilogy
It remains to be seen if Kingdom Hearts III beat Resident Evil 2 for the biggest launch of 2019. Of course, it is only February, and we have a myriad of games releasing in the coming months, so that record will probably be beaten by another title soon afterward.
Regardless, it’s nice to see Kingdom Hearts still charming fans 17 years after the first game released. It seems that no matter where we stand as an industry, everyone will always be down for a heartless take on their favorite Disney worlds.
